Obituary

On Sunday, June 7, 2026, God, in His infinite wisdom, called His faithful servant, Alice Yasmin Hurley Carter, from labor to reward. Surrounded by the love of family and sustained by God's grace, she peacefully transitioned from this earthly life into eternal rest at the age of 71. Alice was born on July 11, 1954, to the late Willie O.D. Hurley and late Hester Louise Abernathy Hurley. From an early age, Alice displayed a loving spirit, a strong work ethic, honorable independence, and a deep appreciation for family and faith. She was a 1972 graduate of Deshler High School and afterwards attended the University of North Alabama with aspirations of becoming a special education teacher. At an early age, Alice accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She united with Healing Fountain Apostolic Faith Church and remained a dedicated member for over forty years. Her faith was evident in the way she nurtured, loved, encouraged, and prayed for others. Alice was formerly united in marriage to Lucius Carter, Jr. To this union were born three children. Early in her career, Alice was employed by Genesco shoe factory and later became a full-time homemaker. She was respected for her dedication, integrity, and service. Whether at home or at church, she left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Among her greatest joys were reading the Bible, praying, decorating, exercising, and completing puzzles and word games. A natural caregiver, she devoted her life to the loving care and development of children. In addition to raising her own children and helping nurture her grandchildren, she became a cherished maternal figure to countless others who were blessed by her kindness, guidance, and unconditional love. Alice possessed a warm smile, a generous heart, and a loving spirit that made everyone feel welcome. She was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Sharon Hurley and Ella Rutland; uncle, James Hurley; and aunts: Ned Ella Lewis, Martha Wilson, and Dorothy Brown. Cherishing precious memories and celebrating a life well-lived are her: son, Omar Demetrius (Katrina) Carter of Madison, AL; daughters: Laneddye Denise Carter of White House, TN, and Yasmin Charde’ Carter of Sheffield, AL; grandchildren: Allison Carter and Alexis Carter, both of Madison, AL, Keniyah Carter of White House, TN, Makiyah Hankins of Muscle Shoals, AL, and Raven Carter and Alex Carter, both of Sheffield, AL; sisters: JoAnn Hogan and Rosita Hurley, both of Sheffield, AL, Gloria Bailey of Tuscumbia, AL, and Regina (Dennis) Roy and Callie (James) Clay, both of Muscle Shoals, AL; brothers: Frederick (Renetha) Abernathy, Sr. of Tuscaloosa, AL, Wayne Abernathy of Sheffield, AL, and Dwight (Sandra) Abernathy of McDonough, GA; honorary granddaughter, Aayliah Davis of Sheffield, AL; and devoted friend, Grace (Gregory) Gunn of Tuscumbia, AL, along with a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, other relatives, church family members, and friends whose lives were touched by her kindness and love. While we mourn her earthly departure, we rejoice in knowing that she is resting safely in the arms of Jesus. The legacy of faith, love, strength, and perseverance that she leaves behind will continue to inspire generations to come.
