Annie Beatrice
"Nekum" Smith
Jun 14, 1932 — Jul 18, 2024
Jacksonville
Sunrise
Annie (Key) Smith was born on June 14, 1932, in Florence, Alabama
to the late Nathaniel Key, Sr., and the late Viola Key.
A Life Well Spent
In the late 1890s, Annie's grandmother, Mary Ola Key, newly baptized at
the age of 16, was given the honor of naming the family church after the
spirit instructed her twice to name it Mt. Moriah. Annie was raised in this
church, which was later named Mt. Moriah Primitive Baptist Church,
where she confessed her life to Christ at an early age.
Annie was a faithful and devoted member of Mt. Moriah, where she
selflessly served on the Usher Board, taught beginners Sunday School
and Bible School classes, served as a member of Mt. Moriah Sister Aide
Society, and sang in the Adult Choir. Her commitment to do the Lord's
work extended beyond the church walls as she took care of many children
and elderly people in the community, further demonstrating her patience
and caring heart.
Mrs. Smith began working for the University of North Alabama in
1975 until she retired. She later moved to Jacksonville, Florida to live
with her daughter, Therese Palmer, and family, where she attended
Deermeadows Baptist Church and was a member of the Senior Women's
Adult Group. Annie was known by family and friends as "Nekum" and
her grandchildren affectionately called her "NaNa."
