Deacon Charles C. Hetherington, Sr. was born in Frisco City, Alabama on December 30, 1945 to the late Frank Hetherington, Sr. and Tossie Hetherington. Charles departed this life on Monday, May, 30, 2016. He was one of ten children born into this union, He confessed hope in Christ at Mt. Rose Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Johnson. Charles moved to New Jersey after completing high school and later migrated to North Alabama where he attended Drake State University in Huntsville, Alabama and completed a trade in Masonry. In 1973, Charles met his loving wife, Brenda . Charles & Brenda were joined in holy matrimony on December 13,1975 and to this union two sons were born. Charles became a member at Poplar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. While a deacon at Poplar Creek he was proactive in the re-construction of the new church. Charles also loved devotion and would often sing a verse of his favorite songs. "Won't it Be Grand" and "Yes, God is Real". He later moved his membership to Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church where he also served for several years; then later moved to Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained faithful as a deacon until his death.
Charles was a very jovial and kind-hearted man who loved to tell jokes, cook, dance and play cards with family and friends; and we considered him to be a handyman. He was well known throughout the community as "Milk Man", where he worked as the first African American at Meadow Gold for 15 years until he retired. He worked as a car salesman at North Alabama Ford Dealership in Athens, Alabama. Charles was also an entrepreneur, opening up his first business, C & S Cleaners, in 1988. Then he ventured into the restaurant business, and he opened Country Cuisine & BBQ in 2004.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tossie and Frank Hetherington, Sr.; brother-in-law, Reboth Thompson, Johnny Showers, and Johnny Phillips.
Charles leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Brenda Farrar Hetherington; three children, Melissa Hetherington, Huntsville, Alabama, Charles Hetherington, Jr., and Steve (Renada) Hetherington, both of Athens, Alabama; one special beloved granddaughter, Cree Hetherington; two special little nephews, Camden and Jaxson Mayes; and one special little great-niece, Farrah Timberlake; four brothers, Frank (Pat) Hetherington, Jr. of Red Bank, New Jersey, Billy ( Mary) Hetherington, Melvin(Delois) Hetherington, Andrew Hetherington, all of Frisco City, Alabama; five sisters, Helen Phillips, of Mobile, Alabama, A'Della Showers and Mildred Thompson of Frisco City, Alabama, Barbara (Dr. Clayton) Detroit , Michigan, Betty (Charles) Whisenhunt, Fairfield, Georgia; four brother-in-laws, Wade (Linda) Farrar, Glenn Farrar, Alvin Farrar, and Jerry (Elettie) Farrar, all of Athens, Alabama; three sisters-in-law, Beverly (Rocky) Kirby, Minieva Timberlake, both of Athens, Alabama, and Melesa Mayes, Florence, Alabama; two aunts and one uncle Lavinia Rogers, Annie Mary Adams, and Ted Lambert; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
