Obituary

Mrs. Edna M. Booker was born on January 12, 1915 to the late Mr. and Mrs. McKinley and Doca Ricks in Colbert County, Alabama. Mrs. Booker peacefully slipped into eternal rest at 10:30 PM on Sunday, March 29th, 2015 at her residence in Sheffield, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her brother, Emmitt Ricks and sister, Isabelle Robinson. Mrs. Booker moved to Sheffield, Alabama in 1928 and united with First Missionary Baptist Church of Sheffield on 20th Street under the leadership of Reverend J.C. Yarbrough. She remained a faithful and dedicated member until her health began to fail. She served on the Nurses Guild and Hospitality Committee. She was known for her favorite slaw. She was the eldest member at First Baptist. Mrs. Booker attended Christian Home School in Tuscumbia, Alabama and Leighton Training School, Leighton, Alabama. Edna became the second black nurse of the Shoals area and was employed for Dr. Rea for over 28 years. Although she retired from her job she did not retire from her community. She continued for over 50 plus years in any aspect whether it was to sit with your family or to cook up one of her scrumptious meals. Oh yes she would suit up in her crisp white nurse uniform and off she went. She answered to many names like: Sister, Aunt Edna, Tee Booker, Webby, Nurse Booker, Mama Booker, and even Chicken. Even the two year old knew Tee Booker. If you stopped to visit her she would always ask, " Can I fix you something to eat?" Edna would leave you with something whether it was words of wisdom, some vegetables, fresh picked peppers to spice your greens, and flower seeds. Mrs. Booker received numerous awards over the years. Humanitarian Award for Outstanding Community Service(1996), Zeta Phi Beta recognized Mrs. booker as an Outstanding Senior Citizen. She was honored by the Finer Womanhood and Sisterly Love Civic Culture. Mrs. Booker lived her entire life based on Luke 6:38. You know its hard to beat an Outstanding Young Woman unless you live to become that Outstanding 100 year old senior citizen who never used nothing but a wringer washer and a motorless lawnmower. Sister , you will be missed!!!! Those left to cherish her memories: a devoted sister, Girneace Godbey; four nieces, Callie Twitty, Cynthia(Miree) Squire, Shannon Butler, and Marion Pillar; one nephew, Michael (Darlene)Godbey; devoted cousin Rosalyn Taylor. Special thanks to : Amedisys Hospice Care, caregivers: Sheryl Godbey, Mary J. Johnson and Dorothy Ricks.
