Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth Odessa Butler Summerhill McGuire was born on December 18, 1925, in Florence, Alabama to the late Mr. and Mrs. Leamon Butler. She departed this life on August 25, 2017, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, Florence, Alabama. She was affectionately called "Dear" by her children and grandchildren, and to nieces and nephews she was "Aunt Baby".

Mrs. McGuire accepted Christ at an early age and joined Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in rural Lauderdale County, where she remained faithful and active until her death. During the very active periods of her Christian life at Galilee, she was the recording and corresponding Secretary, Sunday School Assistant Secretary, Adult Sunday School Teacher, President of the Matrons, member of the finance committee, secretary of the senior choir, Director of Vacation Bible School, member of the Missionary Society. she was also very active in the Muscle Shoals District Baptist Association, where she served as the second Vice President, first Vice President, and the President of the Muscle Shoals Distract Women's Auxiliary. She was a member of Miriam Chapter #6, Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. McGuire's early education began at Mt. Zion School in the Lauderdale County School System. She graduated from Burrell High School (Florence, Alabama) in 1944. Upon graduating from high school, she entered Alabama State University, where she earned the Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. Because of her belief in "life-long learning", she further studied at the University of North Alabama, earning both the Master of Arts degree and the Education Specialist degree. Mrs. McGuire began her professional career as an elementary teacher at Mt. Zion Elementary School. She later shared her love for teaching at West End School, Underwood School and Wilson School, where she retired as a 6th grade teacher in June 1988. She was a gifted teacher, and this dedication to the profession earned her the distinct honor of being named Teacher of the Year. Mrs. McGuire's influence on children and youth was evident as she worked with Boy Scouts of America and the 4-H Clubs. She knew that being a great educator meant supporting membership in educational organizations like the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association, and the alumni associations of both Alabama State University and University of North Alabama.

Mrs. McGuire lived by the motto, "Be a servant for God by servicing mankind." She was a member of the Kappa Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., since 1979 and served as Chaplain and Assistant Secretary. She gave church addresses for various occasions, spearheaded many programs and served in various other capacities where she continued to service mankind as a servant of God. While it was not possible to serve everyplace, Mrs. McGuire made financial contributions to various groups that included NAACP, Red Cross, United Way, United Negro College Fund, Sight Conversation, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, World Hunger and Ethiopia Hunger Fund. When Mrs. McGuire wasn't involved with groups and organizations, she enjoyed collecting news clippings about people she knew, as well as famous people, reading, working puzzles and watching "The Price is Right" and various sports, especially basketball.

Mrs. McGuire was twice widowed (William H. Summerhill and Oscar J. McGuire ). She was also preceded in death by her parents, Leamon and Endia Butler, her son, Eddie Washington Summerhill, and her daughter, Phylistene (Dolly) Groce, as well as her siblings, Elnora Butler, Louise Garner, Mimmie Rowell, Wylodene Williams, Anthony Butler, Willie Butler and Lee Butler.
