We celebrate the life and the homegoing of Sister Eula Mae Summerhill Smith with thanksgiving and appreciation to God for allowing her to be with us for these many years.
Sister Smith was born November 5, 1925, to the late John Dewey Summerhill and Maggie Irons Summerhill in Lauderdale County. She was the fourth of eight children born to this union.
At an early age, Sister Smith accepted Christ and united with Springhill Missionary Baptist Church. Later in life, she transferred her membership to Bethel Lauderdale Missionary Baptist Church to join her husband, Arthur Lee Smith, where they could worship and serve the Lord together. She was a faithful and active servant of God. She actively served as Youth Choir Director and enjoyed working with the youth in other endeavors. She also served as a member of the adult choir.
Sister Smith attended Mount Zion School from the first through the eighth grades and Burrell High School from the ninth through the twelfth grades. She graduated from Burrell High School on June 1, 1944.
She was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Arthur Lee Smith. This union was blessed with four children.
To further her educational and professional goals, Sister Smith attended the Chattanooga, Tennessee, School of Cosmetology, from which she graduated in 1946, receiving her license to practice. She was devoted to her profession and felt compelled to increase her knowledge and skills in her field by obtaining additional training in wholistic products and services. She developed and patented various hair oils, treatments, and other hair care products for the restoration and enhancement of hair care services for her clients. She was considered an excellent beautician and had a loyal clientele who were not shy about letting her and others know about their loyalty to her. She had a passion for the beauty in creation. She loved working in her yard and absolutely adored beautiful flowers and doing lawn work. She spent many days mowing, fertilizing, and watering the lawn, and watering flowers, etc. She was awarded Beautification Yard of the Year, 1st place, by the City of Florence Beautification Board, four times. She was elated to receive such an honor, but her satisfaction was just working in the yard, breathing the open air, and seeing her hard work take root and flourish. Another passion was fishing. she enjoyed fishing as often as she could, but especially on Mondays, which were known as her "fish day".
Sister Smith loved life. She loved the Lord and her children, and she dearly adored her grandchildren.
She made her transition on August 3, 2017.
