Henry Cunningham known as "Cooneye" was born to Henry and Ida Mae Carroll Cunningham on April 3, 1937 in Osceola, Arkansas. He grew up in Florence, Alabama. On September 23, 2014, Henry departed this life at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, AL. Henry attended Burrell Slater School and soon after joined the US Navy. He later married Mary Virginia Bennett and to this union was born Valarie and Anthony. After serving 22 years in the Navy he went back to school, graduating San Diego Miramar College with a degree in Psychology. He worked as a drug rehabilitation counselor while in the Navy. Years later he decided to open his own business and was the first Afro-American entrepreneur in San Diego. There arose an opportunity to work with the Saudian government training civilians to build ships which lasted 10 years. Henry returned to the United States in 1991 and opened a store known as "The College Package Store." Henry had many professions and traveled to many foreign lands in his life time. He was a hard worker who believed in taking care of his family and was known for his sarcastic sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Mary Cunningham; brother, Charles "Sickeye" Cunningham. Henry leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Valarie (Brandon) Ramsey, Florence, AL; son, Anthony (Gabby) Cunningham, San Diego, CA: sister, Bertha Wilson, Glen Cove, N.Y; six grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
