Mr. James Walter Gibson, Sr. (Duck) was born October 5, 1932 in Florence, Alabama to the late Alex Gibson and Nellie Johnson Armstead. He departed this life on Saturday January 14, 2017 at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Mr. Gibson confessed Christ at an early age and united with Rock Primitive Baptist Church where he was a faithful and active member and also in the Male Chorus until his health became an issue.
He retired from Richards Center (Florence City Board of Education) after 25 years of service.
He was preceded in death by a devoted companion, Irene Coffee Warren; three sisters, Lena Mae Armstead, Mattie Mae Guins of Florence, Alabama and Harriet Sanders of Lima, Ohio.
Those left to cherish his memories are: six children, James Walter Gibson, Jr., Clarksville, Tennessee, James Louis (Sharon) Gibson, Diedra Gibson, Valencia Gibson all of Louisville, Kentucky, Sophia (Gary) Fuqua, Florence, Alabama, Vivian Long, Lima, Ohio, Leatra Nance, Florence, Alabama, Dexter (Brenda) Warren, Killen, Alabama; Eight brothers, Alex (Betty) Armstead, Jr., John (Mildred) Armstead, Frank (Sherry) Koger, Jr., all of Florence, Alabama, Felix Armstead, Charles Armstead, Larry (Monica) Koger, all of Lima, Ohio, Jerry (Alfreda) Koger of Anniston, Alabama, Harrison (Karen) Koger of Douglasville, Georgia; Five sisters, Sazzie Thompson, Shirley Armstead, Berry (John), Florence, Alabama, Annie Pearl (Greg) Brown, Lima, Ohio, Brenda(Floyd) Koger Robinson of Mableton, Georgia, and Patricia Koger Groves of Austell, Georgia; one aunt, Jennie (Funrow) Cole, Jr., Bellwood, Illinois; 17 grandchildren; 21 great grand children; 1 great- great grand child; a loving and devoted cousin, Gilda Hooks of Florence, Alabama; and a host of family and friends.
