The Life and Journey of Mrs. Jessie Eugenia Summerhill Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a women that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30 God, in his ultimate wisdom chose to fill an empty space in His heavenly flower garden on Thursday, February 26, 2015. He searched out His humble servant, Jessie Eugenia(Gilbert) Summerhill, wrapped His arms of love around her and lifted her to rest. Jessie was born on June 21st, 1940 in Florence, Alabama to the late Ruby and Judson Gilbert. She was the second of three children. She was a spirit - filled and energetic child who faithfully fulfilled her role in the family as a daughter and older sister. She was baptized as a child and was a lifelong member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. She received her elementary education from Oakland and the Mt. Zion schools. She attended Burrell Slater High School where she was crowned "1955" Burrell Slater Homecoming Queen. She was extremely proud to achieve her State Certificate of High School Equivalency from the Alabama Department of Education. She aspired to further her talents and gifts, receiving her certificate of completion for Commercial Sewing, her Certificate of Food Service Training for "Cook and Baker", and her Honor Certificate from MUC-KO Beauty College, where she graduated with high honors. Jessie graduated with an associates degree from Selma University(Courtland Academy). Jessie was united in holy matrimony to the late Willie James Summerhill on February 9th, 1957. To this union would be the blessing of five beautiful children. In later years, God blessed Jessie with three additional handsome sons. Jessie obtained many certificates and licenses that opened doors for various employment opportunities. She worked with families that needed nurturing and loving care for their children. She was a beautician, an Attendant at Shelton's Funeral Home and she managed multiple locations of Shelton's Foster Care in Florence. After leaving the work force, you could find Jessie attending and supporting various community activities and events. But her most loved event included attending the Grandparents Support Group and the Senior Citizen luncheons at the Handy Homes Center. Jessie was a faithful member of Galilee M.B. Church since a child. She held numerous positions and did so with love and an encouraging spirit. She was a teacher of youth Sunday school and a member of the Gospel Choir, Sr. Usher Board, Missionary Society and the Muscle Shoals District Matrons. She was the van Ministry leader for many years and served in this position with great pride and joy. Jessie was a mentor to many in the church and in the community. Her husband , Willie James Summerhill; her parents, Judson Gilbert and Ruby(Armstead)Gilbert; and Jessie's loving sister , Cornelia Cherry, preceded her in death. Jessie leaves to cherish her precious memories eight loving and supportive children: Howard(Richetta) Summerhill, Cynthia Summerhill, Sheryl Godbey, Karen West, Jerald(friend-Bailey Fulks)Summerhill, Jimmie(Janice) Summerhill, Clifton Summerhill and Clinton Summerhill. She is also survived by twenty-one special and loving grandchildren Cryshaunda, Jade, Shayla ,Pipier, Kamron, Tailor ,Austin, Brian, Amber, Amari ,N'karrah,Jamarian,Jalen, LaShawnda, Camden, J'Me, Sabastian, Darius, Courtney, Ashiya, and Semetria; seventeen great-grandchildren; a loving brother, William Gilbert and his wife, Dorothy, a devoted sister-in- law; aunts: Katie Simmons, Ann Gilbert, Vera Burge; uncles Otis(Josephine) Gilbert, Charlie(Sandra) Gilbert Jr., two sisters-in- law: Eula Smith, and Virginia Summerhill; a brother-in-law Charles (Eugenia) Summerhill; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and great friends. Jessie's life was a reflection of her encouragement, love, and service to others. Her smile was as bright as a rainbow in the sky. Even though she will be deeply missed, we know that this not the end; it is just the beginning
