Karl Andre Florence was born on December 21, 1950, in East Chicago, IN to Nathaniel and Delores Florence Davis.
Karl confessed Christ at an early age and was a member of Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church in East Chicago, IN. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1968, where he was a football and track star. In the track state finals, Karl finished second and set a Calumet High School record of 48.3 seconds for the 440-yard dash that still stands today. His athletic talents earned him a track scholarship to Indiana University Bloomington, where he graduated with a degree in Business and was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Karl dedicated 15 years of service as a welder at U.S. Steel and worked in various other roles before retiring in 2016. Despite his professional achievements, it was Karl's personal qualities that truly defined him. He was known for his unwavering kindness and positivity, always refraining from speaking ill of others and often quoting the Bible's teaching of "70 times 7."
A gifted conversationalist, Karl's intelligence made him a joy to talk to, as he could discuss any topic and leave you with newfound knowledge. Karl was an exceptional cook, especially known for his delicious pot of beans. He often enjoyed experimenting with new recipes and flavors in the kitchen. Karl's love for sports extended beyond football and track; he was an avid basketball, golf, tennis, and hockey enthusiast. He delighted in playing chess for several hours at a time, eagerly taking on chess challenges. He also loved to dance and found enjoyment in a good game of bid whist.
Karl's gentle spirit, engaging personality, and athletic achievements will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
On June 14, 2024, Karl Andre Florence spread his wings and joined those who have preceded him in death including his father, Nathaniel Florence, mother, Delores Davis, stepfather, William Davis, two stepbrothers, Clarence Davis and William D. Davis, two nephews, Shedrick Jerald James Jr. and Dominique Anthony McKinley. Karl leaves to cherish his memories wife, Patricia Florence, son DeAndre Florence, two grandsons, DeAngelo Florence and Deajae Florence, all of Chicago, Illinois, loving brother and sister, Cornell Florence and Arenda James, both of Athens, Alabama, nieces and nephews, Jeanette (Donald) Hardman of South Bend, Indiana, Elena (Pete) Hartnett of Dallas, Texas, Deysha Henry of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Ereca (Joseph) Browder of East Chicago, Indiana, Danielle Florence of Gary, Indiana, Sha'Ettine (Reco) Bowens of Rogersville, Alabama, DeAndre Davis of East Chicago, Indiana, Cornell Florence Jr. of Gary, Indiana, William McLaurin of Hobart, Indiana, 16 great nieces and nephews, 23 great-great nieces and nephews, special friends, Doris Smith of East Chicago, Indiana, Jerry Coffee and "Duke", both of Gary, Indiana, and a host of cousins, family, and friends.
