Laverne Smith affectionately known as " Lue" entered into her eternal rest on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the age of 81.
Laverne was born in Sheffield, Alabama on August 16, 1936, to Benjamin Jones and Stellar Jones who preceded her in death. She was raised in Sheffield, Alabama and graduated from Sterling High School. Early in her life, she accepted Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior. She was a very active member in First Missionary Baptist Church of Sheffield. Subsequently, she moved with her first cousin, Alma Chase to Long Island, New York. She worked at a ladies Hat Factory in downtown New York, as a packer for 11 years. Although Laverne never drove, she could always give you driving directions to anywhere you needed to go. She also never forgot birthdays. As a strong believer in God, she would read her bible daily. She loved listening to gospel songs on the radio. She was a very kind, caring and giving person that will be truly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents , Benjamin and Stellar Jones; her spouse, Andrew Jones, Jr.; her daughter, Cheryl Anderson and her very close friend, Dorothy Burt.
She is survived by her loving son, Raymond (Donna] Smith of South Carolina; her stepson Andrew (Liz) Jones, III of New York; three grandchildren, Latisha Smith of Virginia, Ravin Anderson of Georgia, Raymond (Chanelle) Smith Jr. of Virginia; one step grandchild, Melinda Jones of New York; three great grandchildren, Ra'miyah Styles, Hannah Smith and Raymond Smith, III. Laverne has two sisters, Bettie Cherry and Stella Marbury both of Alabama; three brothers Ben (Arlene) Jones of South Carolina, Robert Jones and David Jones both of New York, former son-in-law Darrel (Tomekia) Anderson of Georgia, four devoted friends, Bessie Jones of New York, Beatrice Shorter of Virginia, Debbie Abbott of Alabama, and Nina Fort of Alabama and a host of other relatives and friends.
