Obituary

Richard Wayne Smith Sr.

August 14,1950-August 31, 2025

In honor of a life well lived, we announce the passing of Richard Wayne Smith Sr., a proud United States Marine and Vietnam Veteran, who went to be with the Lord on August 31, 2025, at the age of 75.

Born on August 14, 1950, in Sheffield, Alabama, Richard was deeply rooted in the values of faith, honor, and service.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He lived by the Marine motto, Semper Fi, a standard he not only upheld in service but instilled in his family as a lifelong principle: faithfulness, integrity, and strength.

After his military service, Richard went on to build a successful career as a Pipefitter with Local 43 Chattanooga, TN, where he retired and started a second career in Michigan before finally returning to his Alabama roots. In retirement, he found joy in time spent with family and took pride in seeing his legacy carried forward by his children and grandchildren. He loved reading and watching westerns, sharing stories about our history and his experiences in life and studying God's word.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert Smith and Juanita Myrick Smith, and by his beloved brothers, David Michael Smith Sr. and Robert Smith, all of Sheffield, Alabama.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Ann Smith, Hamilton, AL; his children: Richard Wayne Smith Jr. (April) Mount Pleasant, MI; James Bradley Smith Sr. (Tara) White Pigeon, MI; and Carrin Juliane Smith Jasper, TN. Step-children, Robert(Mylena) Tidwell Hayleyville, AL, Jeremy(Tiffany)Tidwell Hackleburg, AL. He also leaves behind in his legacy, 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Semper Fi, Marine. We'll carry the torch from here.

Service will be on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 4 pm at Grace Memorial Funeral Home 501 Broad Street Sheffield, Alabama 35660. He will be buried at a National Cemetery to honor his military service at a later date.
