Sam Oscar Hogan, Sr. was born June 8, 1923, in Cherokee, Alabama, to the late Fred and Mary Lizzie Hogan. He departed this life on September 14, 2016.
He confessed belief in Christ at an early age, and joined Rutland Chapel CME Church in Cherokee, Alabama. He later brought his membership to Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Pride, Alabama, where he served as a deacon until his health failed.
Sam attended school in Cherokee, Alabama and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II, and was honorably discharged. After returning home, he worked various jobs, and retired from TVA.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years, Myra Hogan; parents, Fred and Mary Lizzie Hogan; two sons, Sam Hogan, Jr., and David Hogan; four brothers, Dave Hogan, Robert Hogan, Louis Mack Hogan, and George Hogan; three sisters, Lillie B. Torrance, Janice M. Johnson, and Catherine Brozo.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two sons, Charlie Hogan (Carolyn) and Richard Hogan , of Tuscumbia, Alabama; three daughters, Mary E. Johnson (Robert), Louise Flint, and Julia Smith (Paul), of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; grandchildren, Rodney Hogan, of Sheffield, Alabama, Mercer Johnson (Tasha), and Deidre Johnson, of Saginaw, Michigan, Allen Smith and Eric Lynch (Della), of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, LaToya Flint, of Birmingham, Alabama, LaDonna Hogan (Carlos), of Sheffield, Alabama, Monica Barnett, of Florence, Alabama; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sidney Hogan (Nevie), of Cherokee, Alabama, and William Hogan, of St. Petersburg, Florida; two sisters, Josephine Washington and Margaret Brown, of Birmingham, Alabama, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
