William L.
Coleman
Jan 13, 1941 — Jul 1, 2025
Florence
Mr. William Lewis "Jake" Coleman was born on January 13, 1941, to the late Alger S. Coleman and the late Hattie M. Newman. Although born to Alger and Hattie, Jake was lovingly raised by the late Reverend Chalmers Shanes and his wife, Lillie, who helped instill in him strong Christian values, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose.
At an early age, Jake accepted Christ and united with St. James Missionary Baptist Church, where his spiritual journey began. Later in life, he became a devoted member of First Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Marshall, remaining a faithful and active member until his passing on July 1, 2025.
Jake began working at the young age of fifteen, displaying a strong work ethic and commitment to service that would define his life. He was employed at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital for 35 years. At the age of 24, he joined the Florence Police Department, where he became a pioneering figure. In 1980, he made history as the department's first African American Sergeant, and in 1995, he was promoted to Lieutenant, again breaking barriers as the first African American to hold that rank. After 32 years of dedicated service to the City of Florence, Jake retired from the department in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, courage, and community impact.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alger S. Coleman; his mother, Hattie M. Newman; his stepfather, Johnnie Newman; his stepmother, Eva Coleman; his beloved wife, Juanita Coleman; his sister, Helen Long; his daughter, Deidre Dianne Coleman; and his son, William Sebastian Coleman.
Jake leaves to cherish his memory his loving children: Edwin Jerome Coleman, Onita Simone Coleman, Stacey Mario Coleman, Gila Roberson (Jameel), Demond Koger, Kimberly Ragland, and Rayfield Ragland. Jake also leaves behind 16 beloved grandchildren and 18 treasured great-grandchildren. He is survived by two devoted brothers, Alger S. Coleman (Mattie) and Ronnie Newman (Juanita); one loving sister, Willamenus Pierce; and his special friend, Vannie Holland. He will be deeply missed by a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
